Agilent HPLC Pump Troubleshooting: Pressure Ripple, Leaks and the Purge Valve
How we track down pressure ripple, leaks and purge valve problems on Agilent 1100, 1200 and 1260 Infinity HPLC pumps, in the order that saves the most time.
HPLCHPLC Baseline Noise and Drift: Causes, Diagnosis and Fixes
Most noisy or drifting HPLC baselines come down to ten causes. This is the order our engineers check them in on Shimadzu, Waters and Agilent systems, with a pattern table and a simple stop-flow test.
Frequently asked about the Agilent 1260 Infinity
Straight answers from the engineers who service it — from our own service notes, published guides and the instrument's own documentation.
Will my existing HPLC methods run on an Agilent 1260 Infinity?
Yes. The 1260 Infinity is rated to 600 bar, which gives UHPLC-class speed, but it still runs conventional HPLC columns — so existing methods keep working while new ones can be made faster. It runs under OpenLAB CDS. On this platform we handle installation, IQ/OQ/PQ qualification and AMC.
What detectors does the 1260 Infinity II support?
The 1260 Infinity II is a modular platform that supports UV, PDA (diode array), fluorescence and RI detectors, which is what makes it suit laboratories that need flexibility across several methods. PDA matters where you need spectra at every point of the run — impurity profiling and peak purity; RI is for compounds that do not absorb UV, such as sugars and polymers; fluorescence is for very low concentrations.
Do you provide IQ/OQ/PQ documentation for the 1260 Infinity?
Yes — installation, IQ/OQ/PQ qualification and AMC are the services we provide on this platform. Installation Qualification confirms the instrument is installed as specified, Operational Qualification that it performs to specification, and Performance Qualification that it does so under your own methods and conditions. Our guide Understanding IQ/OQ/PQ qualification explains what each phase verifies and why auditors ask for all three.
Why is the pressure on my Agilent 1260 Infinity rising?
Rising backpressure almost always means a blockage — the analytical column, the guard column or the in-line filter — and the most common cause is precipitated buffer. Phosphate and similar buffers must never be flushed straight into an organic solvent: the salt crystallises and can block the pump, injector and column together. The safe order is buffer, then water, then organic. If the pressure falls or fluctuates instead of rising, look at the pump seal, the check valves or a leak.
Which spare parts wear out on a Agilent 1260 Infinity?
The predictable ones: the deuterium lamp in the UV detector (roughly 2000 hours of use), pump seals, pistons and check valves, the injector rotor seal and needle seat, in-line filters and solvent frits, the guard column, PEEK and steel fittings, ferrules, vials and septa. These are the parts that come up on service visit after service visit, and the ones worth keeping on the shelf.
Why is the baseline on the Agilent 1260 Infinity noisy or drifting?
Four causes cover most cases: the detector lamp is at the end of its life, there is air or dirt in the flow cell, the mobile phase is not mixing or degassing properly, or the room temperature is changing during the run. Work through them in that order before assuming an electronic fault. Our checklist Diagnosing HPLC baseline noise and drift walks through it step by step.
Do you service the Agilent 1260 Infinity in Mumbai, Thane or Pune?
Yes. Vision Analytical is based in Ambernath in Thane district and has worked with laboratories across Maharashtra and Gujarat since 2022, including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. When you enquire, share the laboratory address and the instrument's full model name. Coverage does not mean a branch office or a guaranteed response time in every city — scheduling is confirmed directly with you.
What is the difference between an AMC and a CMC for a Agilent 1260 Infinity?
An AMC covers the engineer's visits and labour — typically two preventive visits a year plus breakdown calls — with spare parts charged separately. A CMC is comprehensive: the wear parts are included too, although items such as lamps, columns and glassware are often excluded and the contract wording decides. Calibration is scheduled every 6 or 12 months according to your own SOP, not ours. Our article AMC vs CMC: what's the difference? goes through how to choose.
