Shimadzu UV-1800 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer Troubleshooting and Service

UV-Vis service, breakdown support and spares across Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Frequently asked about the Shimadzu UV-1800 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer

Straight answers from the engineers who service it — from our own service notes, published guides and the instrument's own documentation.

What wavelength range does the Shimadzu UV-1800 cover, and can IQ/OQ/PQ be run on it?

The UV-1800 is a double-beam UV-Vis covering 190–1100 nm. Pharmacopoeia validation programs are built into the instrument, so IQ/OQ/PQ runs on it directly. We carry the deuterium lamp for it and, as part of calibration, perform the wavelength accuracy, photometric accuracy and stray light checks. Our guide Understanding IQ/OQ/PQ qualification explains what each phase verifies.

Which reference standards are used to calibrate a UV-Vis spectrophotometer like the UV-1800?

Wavelength accuracy is checked with a holmium oxide filter or the emission lines of a mercury lamp; absorbance (photometric) accuracy with a potassium dichromate solution; stray light with potassium chloride, sodium iodide or sodium nitrite solutions; and resolution with toluene in hexane. These are the checks customers ask about at audit time, and the ones we document during calibration.

Why are my UV-1800 readings wrong or unstable?

The usual causes are ordinary: the lamp is at the end of its life, there are fingerprints on the cuvette (the most common cause, and the most avoidable), a baseline was not taken before the measurement, or the solution itself is turbid or dirty. The UV range (190–380 nm) comes from the deuterium lamp and the visible range (380–1100 nm) from the tungsten-halogen lamp, so which region is affected tells you which lamp to suspect.

Do you have a refurbished Shimadzu UV-1800?

Our refurbished catalogue lists a Shimadzu UV-1800 in excellent condition, wavelength-calibrated and function-tested before listing, with a 6-month warranty — suited to routine QC laboratories. A listing is information rather than a stock confirmation, so ask us about the specific unit, the documents supplied with it and the installation arrangement.

What should I tell you when the UV-1800 breaks down?

Send the brand and full model, the serial number (spares and warranty are tied to it), what the instrument is doing in your own words — "pressure is rising", "no peak" — since when and whether it started suddenly, any error message on the screen, when the last preventive maintenance or calibration was done, and whether the unit is under warranty, under an AMC or a paid visit. We do not promise a fix before seeing the instrument: one pressure complaint can have five different causes.

Do you service the Shimadzu UV-1800 in Mumbai, Thane or Pune?

Yes. Vision Analytical is based in Ambernath in Thane district and has worked with laboratories across Maharashtra and Gujarat since 2022, including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. When you enquire, share the laboratory address and the instrument's full model name. Coverage does not mean a branch office or a guaranteed response time in every city — scheduling is confirmed directly with you.

What is the difference between an AMC and a CMC for a Shimadzu UV-1800?

An AMC covers the engineer's visits and labour — typically two preventive visits a year plus breakdown calls — with spare parts charged separately. A CMC is comprehensive: the wear parts are included too, although items such as lamps, columns and glassware are often excluded and the contract wording decides. Calibration is scheduled every 6 or 12 months according to your own SOP, not ours. Our article AMC vs CMC: what's the difference? goes through how to choose.
