Vision Analytical
PTFE tubing, 1/16 inch outside diameter, for the low-pressure side of an HPLC system: solvent inlet lines, waste lines and seal wash lines. PTFE is chemically inert to effectively every mobile phase in routine use, which is why it is the standard material from the bottle to the pump.
It belongs only on the low-pressure side. Downstream of the pump, where system pressure is developed, stainless steel or PEEK is used instead - PTFE will not hold that pressure and creeps under it.
Two properties that matter in practice
- PTFE is slightly gas permeable. Solvent standing in a long PTFE inlet line picks air back up, which is one of the reasons an online degasser sits after the bottles rather than before them.
- Internal diameter sets delay volume. 1/16 inch is the outside diameter only; tubing of the same OD is supplied in several internal bores, and a wider bore in the wrong place adds volume the method does not expect.
Cut tubing square with a proper tubing cutter rather than a blade. An angled or crushed end will not seat in a fitting port, and that gap is dead volume.
