Inline stainless steel frit filter, 0.5 µm, for the HPLC solvent inlet line. It is the first barrier in the flow path: it stops particulates from reaching the check valves, the pump seals and finally the column inlet frit, all of which cost far more than the filter.
A filter is a consumable that is meant to block. Its condition is read from the pump, not from the filter.
Signs the filter is loaded
- Pump cavitating or losing prime while the bottle is still full.
- Flow falling below the set rate, or pressure sagging at constant flow.
- Noise on the baseline that appears at the same time as the pressure ripple.
A filter clogged with buffer salt or microbial growth should be replaced rather than back-flushed, because what is released from the frit goes straight to the check valves. The single most effective preventive habit is not leaving aqueous buffer standing on the instrument overnight: buffers grow biofilm, and biofilm blocks 0.5 µm frits quickly.
