Replacement flame ionisation detector jet for a gas chromatograph. The jet is the narrow-bore tip where the column effluent and hydrogen meet the air supply and burn; ions formed in that flame are collected and become the signal, so the bore and its cleanliness set the detector's response.
Jets are not interchangeable across all applications. The bore is different for capillary and packed-column work, and high-temperature or simulated-distillation service uses its own jet, so the jet must match the configuration rather than only the instrument.
How a bad jet shows itself
- Response falling gradually across weeks while injection and column are unchanged.
- The flame failing to light, or lighting and then going out.
- A spiking or wandering baseline caused by deposits flaking in the flame.
- Peak shape fine but sensitivity poor - contamination narrows the bore before it blocks it.
Silica deposits from column bleed and from dirty sample matrices are the usual contaminant. A lightly fouled jet can be cleaned; an eroded or enlarged bore cannot be recovered and is replaced.
